what causes baby dandruff?

baby dandruff treatment shampoo

Baby Dandruff

Dandruff is caused because the skin cells on the scalp are always shedding, but normally the process isn't visible. Experts believe an overgrowth of a fungus called malassezia causes the shedding to occur too quickly. When it does, you may notice white or grey flakes coming off your baby's head. Dandruff isn't contagious or dangerous, but it can be a bit itchy and unsightly.

treatment and prevention

If your baby does have a mild case of dandruff, you might try brushing his hair before shampooing and washing it daily with Extra Gentle Shampoo to remove the excess flakes.

Avoid greasy or oily hair conditioners and styling products, which will make the dandruff worse. Conditioning Hair Polish is a great alternative if your baby has unruly hair or gets tangles.

Additional causes for Flaky Scalp

  • Your baby's head may be peeling from a sunburn on his/her scalp.

If your baby's scalp is peeling from a sunburn, avoid this risk throughout the year by limiting his/her sun exposure and having him/her wear a hat outdoors. Additional protection: apply Noodle & Boo's Play-Day Sunscreen SPF 30 prior to sun exposure.

  • You might be using too much shampoo and not rinsing well enough when you wash his/her hair.

The dried shampoo can come off in flakes that look like dandruff. Try using only a dime-size dollop of shampoo or less, and spend twice as much time rinsing it out as you do lathering it in.

  • Cradle cap is a very common condition that could look like baby dandruff.

  • Other possibilities are conditions that can cause scales on the skin, such as eczema or psoriasis.

  • If your baby's flaking is accompanied by hair loss in a particular spot and he/she has swollen glands, he/she may have ringworm, which is caused by a fungus.

Visit your pediatrician as soon as possible.
